To learn more about the findings from this research, download the free Technical Research Report at: www.fmglobal.com Fire Test 4 of 4: In partnership with the Property Insurance Research Group (PIRG), FM Global conducted a series of large-scale fire tests to assess the impact of High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans on sprinkler system performance in rack storage fires. Findings from the study revealed HVLS fans, without any means of shut down, caused an unacceptable performance of the sprinkler system. However, when automatic shut down of the fan occurred, a properly designed and maintained sprinkler system performed adequately. The following test, conducted on 2 December 2010 at FM Global's US5-million Research Campus in West Glocester, Rhode Island USA., involves an HVLS fan installed above rack storage of cardboard boxes filled with plastic cups (FM Global's standard plastic commodity). Video footage includes camera angles of both the east and west aisles of the storage array.
